AMITIE ATTENDEE

The Origin Story

My friend Chloe and I met in Toronto late last year for a coffee chat. As we sipped on lattes and shared our experience of attending countless startup founder meetups in the city, we both concluded that these events were missing the mark and something needed to change.

I saw two huge problems with founder focused events in Toronto

1. The Skewed Gender Ratio

For a long time, startups, tech and VC have been a big “boys club” with very little female representation. The lack of gender diversity causes a large discrepancy in the male to female attendee ratio for any startup related events.

For many girls, including myself, seeing a sea full of male names on a guest list is intimidating and deters us from wanting to attend. When fewer women come out, the gender gap continues to increase. Thus creating a vicious cycle.

2. The Transnational Nature of These Gatherings

The second big problem with founder events is the lack of connections. Startup events can often feel very “networking” focused, with people more interested in exchanging business cards than in making real, meaningful friendships.

Chloe and I realized that a community focused on comfort and building genuine connection was missing. This realization led to Amitié. We host monthly socials in Toronto for a small group of girls to intentionally foster an intimate setting that serves as a catalyst for second and third degree conversation.
